A Brief History
Kapshi, a Jagir under the Ghorpade Dynasty, was established in the mid-17th century by the descendants of Shrimant Senapati Malojirao Ghorpade, a general in the Maratha army and father of the famous warrior Santajirao "Santaji" Ghorpade. His military prowess and leadership were instrumental in laying the foundations for the establishment and sustenance of Kapshi as a Ghorpade stronghold. Located 62 km south of Kolhapur, Kapshi was part of the Kolhapur-Dekkan Residency during the British Raj. The rulers, belonging to the Rajput class, held the hereditary title of 'Senapati', symbolizing their noble and martial lineage.
The region has been significant historically due to its strategic location south of Kolhapur.
Throughout the years, Kapshi played a pivotal role in the broader historical narratives of the Maratha Empire, especially during significant conflicts and during periods of expansion and consolidation under various rulers from the Ghorpade lineage. The region was known for its progressive policies, particularly in the areas of education, social reform, and promotion of agriculture and industry under the enlightened governance of the Ghorpade Dynasty. These aspects underscore the historical and cultural significance of Kapshi within the Ghorpade Dynasty's domain.
