ROYAL GHORPADE DYNASTY ARCHIVE

रॉयल घोरपडे राजवंश संग्रहालय

The Royal Ghorpade Dynasty Archive is a dedicated online platform that delves into the history of the Ghorpade Dynasty and the significant impacts on the regions it ruled. This website aims to be a comprehensive resource, offering insights into the dynasty's origins, notable figures, governance, and legacy of the Royal Ghorpades.

From its ascension as a royal house in 1471 to the ascension of its six remaining states to the new Dominion of India in 1947-1950, the Ghorpades have provided rulers to several sovereign states, particularly during the tenure of the Maratha Empire over south and central Asia.

The House Ghorpade has been called the House of the Dragon since the 15th Century. The etymological origin of the royal house's name has roots in the legendary deeds of Karansinh (Karan the Lion) Bhonsle, a Maratha military commander and Sisodia Rajput, who secured a rope to his great lizard (ghorpad) Yaswanthi, to scale the walls of Vishalgad Citadel and lead an assault which won the 1471 Battle of Khelna.

Subsequent myths and legends of Ghorpade warriors riding war lizards into battle are just that: myths and legends. The Ghorpades commanded forces and were belligerents in several historically significant conflicts, some of which are listed here.

The swords of Ghorpades were like the jaws of death,
They are like a snake chasing you everywhere,
They won’t return to the scabbard
Unless they annihilate you, O Mughals, Beware.

The dynasty has its origins in the valorous martial tradition of the Deccan region, contributing significantly to the area's history through military, administrative, and social advancements.

The Ghorpades played a prominent role in several key conflicts within the Deccan, exerting considerable influence through their military, administrative, and social endeavours. House Ghorpade's ascension gave rise to the royal families that would later govern the princely states of Mudhol and Sandur, along with the jagirs of Dattawad, GajendragadIchalkaranji, and Kapshi, which were crucial in shaping the historical landscape of South-Central India. These regions were known for their progressive policies, particularly in education, social reform, and the promotion of agriculture and industry, reflecting the enlightened governance that marked the dynasty's rule. The dynasty's leaders, such as Raja Yeshwantrao Ghorpade of Sandur, were instrumental in acceding to the Dominion of India, thereby weaving the dynasty's territories into the fabric of the modern Indian state.
